Our Covid-19 journey…

street8

Since March we’ve been very busy… very busy! Around the 19th we geared up for a full UK lockdown and by the following monday SHS was one of the few homeless charities still operating in Brighton. We didn’t close, we didn’t stop and we stepped up.

The first week we increased our hot meal output and street kitchens, first at the Peace Statue and then the Elevator. At the peak we were supplying 1200 hot meals a week, 7 days a week. We were on hand to the council and other charities for supplies and deliveries. Those in temporary accommodation and isolating were also aided by the council ‘food hub’ and we were part of that big team. Food, water, toiletries and all basic essentials including hard to find toilet rolls!

Incredible volunteers came forward to help, young furloughed bar workers, students, bus drivers and office workers joined our existing base. We swelled to 70 volunteers and all were needed. We drove, cooked, delivered, collected, phoned, cleaned and advised 16+ hours a day, every day. We couldn’t have done it without them.

Donations and finance was also paramount. The supermarkets were amazing, as were the local police and the generous public. Thank you to everyone who helped us.

At the moment we have a small breather so hopefully we’ll get more information on this site, please bear with us if things aren’t quite up to date……
