Ruth Brumpton volunteers for Sussex Homeless Support, helping out in the office and at the Street Kitchen.

Ruth has first hand experience of the difficulties that SHS have in trying to provide the contents for the 22 food parcels that are sent out every Friday to families on the poverty line, vulnerable people in emergency accommodation and ex service personnel who have hit upon hard times.

With stocks of food running low, Ruth contacted her local Tesco store in Burgess Hill, explaining the work done by the charity and was able to persuade them to let her to run a food collection day.

Liaising with the SHS office, Ruth compiled a list of the  ‘most needed’ food and took this along to the store, with the SHS banner and a poster requesting that if they could, people buy just one item from the list and donate it to the charity.

In just a few hours, Ruth collected 10 large trays of donated food – that is enough to make up all 22 food parcels.

SHS would like to thank Tesco Burgess Hill for allowing this collection, all those customers who donated and of course Ruth Brumpton for organising this and her friends Caroline Croft, her son and Jessica for being there on the day to spread the word about SHS.

If anyone would like to get involved in a local store collection, Ruth would be happy to advise you on how to go about it.  Please contact her via the website. Meanwhile, our ‘most needed’ food list is on here and we are always happy to take donations at our office in the Old Shoreham Road.
